5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!   July 5, 2008
I have owned my d40 for several months now. Before purchasing it I compared the D40 to other entry level Nikons (d40x and d60) as well as Canons. I am absolutely happy with my purchase. Buy this camera with the 55-200mm vr lens and you cant go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures and Easy   July 5, 2008
This digital camera takes great pictures and is easy to operate. It "feels" like a film loading 35mm camera I used to have and loved. Pictures are sharp and clear. The color is beautiful. We also use this camera when shooting pictures for our school and website.

1 out of 5 stars What a piece of junk!   June 30, 2008

The new D40 I bought from Amazon broke within the first month! An error with the shutter release button (yes the button you press to take a picture only lasted about 200 photo's!). I have years of experience with SLR's so I was pretty shocked that it broke so quickly. I am writing this angry review because I am one week into a two month trip though India and Nepal and service centers are not really available. Don't count on Nikon for help. Buy a Canon!

4 out of 5 stars Extremely Great Camera for The Price   June 28, 2008

I'm a beginner, this is my first DSLR and I'm extremely pleased. It is a little small for people with big hands like me. Honestly, a beginner photographer needs nothing more. The controls are easy to understand and are all laid out very well. Once you get a hang of it, it gets easier to take great pictures. And I've only had it for a few days! Be warned however that the RAW file Nikon cameras produce is called NEF and doesn't work very well with Adobe products. By "doesn't work well" I mean that any custom color settings that you set on the camera won't be recognized, such as 'vivid' mode. This isn't a problem as you can get the same effects in post-production if necessary, and if you plan on shooting JPEG this doesn't affect you. Nikon products will display properly however.

Pros:
Great value for the price
Powerful and fast DSLR

Cons:
NEF issues mentioned above.

I would buy this again.
